The Test Before The Lesson...

They say hindsight is 20/20, and as I look back on my life, I’ve come to realize the truth of this statement. The lessons that felt elusive in the moment seem so glaringly obvious when viewed through the rearview mirror of time.

Yet, the irony is that life doesn't afford us the luxury of living in reverse. It demands that we navigate its uncertainties, one step at a time, FORWARD.

So here’s the paradox: the answers to the most perplexing questions in life often only reveal themselves long after the questions have lost their sting. In my reflections, a few examples of this phenomenon stand out.

When Heartbreak Teaches Us to Love Better

I remember my first real heartbreak—it was a crushing, soul-shaking experience. At the time, it felt like the end of the world. I couldn’t see past the pain, but years later, I realized that it wasn’t just the loss of love that hurt; it was the loss of my identity within that relationship. Looking back, I can see that heartbreak taught me:

  • Love requires self-respect: I lost myself trying to please someone else. It’s a mistake I’ve never repeated.

  • Rejection isn’t failure: It’s redirection toward something or someone better suited for you.

Career Missteps That Shape Success

Early in my career, I made decisions that, at the time, seemed like failures. I chose jobs for the wrong reasons—money, convenience, or because they were what others expected of me. I often felt unfulfilled and stuck. Only later did I realize these experiences gave me invaluable lessons:

  • Know your “why”: Without purpose, even the most lucrative jobs will feel hollow.

  • Embrace failure: Those “wrong” choices taught me more than my “right” ones ever could. They revealed my strengths, passions, and boundaries.

Parenting Through Trial and Error

Parenting is one of the most humbling journeys. I’ve made countless mistakes with my kids—saying the wrong things, being too harsh when they needed compassion, or too lenient when they needed structure. As my children grow, I see the impact of these moments:

  • Apologies matter: Saying “I was wrong” shows strength, not weakness, to your kids.

  • Consistency is key: Even when they push back, children thrive on boundaries and routine.

Life’s Unscripted Turns

There are times when life throws you curveballs—a stroke in the family, an unexpected career shift, or the loss of a loved one. These moments are impossible to prepare for, yet they have taught me some of life’s most profound lessons:

  • Gratitude transforms perspective: Even in hardship, there is always something to be thankful for.

  • Resilience isn’t born; it’s built: Each challenge equips us for the next.

Moving Forward, Armed With Hindsight

Though we live life forward, the answers hidden in our past equip us to face the future more wisely. If I could go back and give myself advice, I’d say:

  • Be kinder to yourself.

  • Embrace uncertainty—it’s the seedbed of growth.

  • Trust that one day, the fog will clear, and the path will make sense.

Life is a tapestry woven from mistakes, triumphs, losses, and love. Though the picture only becomes clear in hindsight, every thread matters. So, while we may long for the clarity that hindsight provides, we must also learn to embrace the mystery of living forward.

In the words of Søren Kierkegaard: “Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.”

Perhaps that is life’s greatest gift—the constant discovery of wisdom, one step at a time.
